COLL MISC 0840/5 - Progressive Lesson No. 1 in Plain English

Progressive posters from the London County Council Elections of 1907. The central point of this poster is a painted picture of a man teaching another , slightly bemused looking man, by writing on a very large blackboard. On the blackboard is written the following:
'When the Trusts own Capital, the Moderates call it by its right name: Capital. But when the people own Capital, the Moderates and the Yellow Press call it Debts to frighten fools.'
At the bottom of the poster in large black lettering is written, 'Vote Progressive'.

COLL MISC 0840/6 - 'Artful Moderate Ruse Exposed'

Progressive Part poster from the London County Council Election of 1907. This poster shows a court scene with a judge seated in the top left of the picture with 'London Public Opinion' written behind him. Below him is a portly man with 'Vested Interests' written upon his sleeve. To the right around a table, stand two policemen each holding up a jacket, and more jackets lay upon the table. The more central of the two policemen is saying 'This coat does not fit him your honour, and belongs to someone else'. Upon the coat he is holding is written 'Municipal Reform 1907'. The other policeman declares, 'This coat fits him like a glove your honour'. He is holding a coat marked 'Moderate'.

Reprint of a cartoon from the London Chronicle newspaper. This cartoon depicts a man, smoking a pipe, to the left of the picture, who hlds several bits of paper marked 'Votes'. To the right of the picture, leaning over him are three large men, dressed in black and wearing top hats. They are marked 'The Co. Promoter','The Manager' and 'The Director' from left to right. Progressive Poster from the London County Council Elections of 1907. The main feature of this painted poster is a fox with a human head (apparently of the Duke of Norfolk) wearing the robes of Royalty, stood on a pulpit, preaching to a crowd of geese. On the wall behind the central figure is a sign reading, 'Down with the Progressives. Monopolies forever'. His pulpit is marked 'Municipal Reform League' and behind/below him are two large sacks marked 'Unearned Uncrement' and 'Ground Rents'.

Progressive Party poster from the 1907 London County Council Election campaign. This main feature of this poster is a large black and white cartoon depicting several caricutures of members of the Moderates sitting on a whale in the middle of an ocean. The whale is marked 'Trusts' and the figures on the whale hold banners proclaiming 'The Moderate Party supported by Trusts' and a newspaper entitled 'The Daily Liar'. To the right of the whale, in the distance, is land marked 'America' and on the left land marked England and London.

A collection of posters drawn from four different collections held at LSE archives. The ‘Political and Tariff Reform Posters’ series includes a selection of political posters produced by various British political parties and the Tariff Reform League from 1892 – 1910. The ‘London County Council Election 1907’ series includes a selection of campaigning posters and papers produced for that election. The ‘British Labour Delegation to Russia’ series includes propaganda posters, papers, gazettes and newspaper articles collected by the Delegation during their visit to Soviet Russia in 1920. The ‘Russia Childcare Posters’ series includes posters produced by the Soviet Ministry of Health (Ministerstvo zdravookhraneniya) from 1930 – 1931, instructing parents on how to take care of their children’s health.
