A Day In The Life of LSE Library Staff

Submitted by: Richard Collings
Date: 2020-2021

We wanted to capture photos of our staff during the pandemic, both at work and play. The photos were taken of staff working in the library and at home. It also showed colleagues travelling, being on holiday and spending quality time with their families. We believed that bringing these photographs together could help to capture some of the significant changes in our daily lives and outlook during lock down. We also thought that putting these pictures together to make a typical day would make an interesting presentation. We had a enthusiastic response, lots of photos were sent in and we made sure we used them all. We then created some music that we thought would fit the style of the presentation.

Celebrating our 125th anniversary: memories of LSE from our community

As part of our 125th anniversary celebrations in the 2020/21 academic year, we asked the LSE community to get in touch and share their photos and memories.
Students, alumni and LSE staff members were all invited to make a permanent contribution to the history of the School, for our Digital Library.
This collection spans multiple decades and features photographs from our community, showcasing personal milestones as well as important cultural moments at LSE.

NHS/Key Workers graffiti mural near LSE campus

Submitted by: Sarah Jewett
Date: 30 May 2020
Location: Sainsbury's (now closed), 71 High Holborn

I was walking for exercise around London from Rosebery Hall towards LSE in late May and was struck by this graffiti mural by Bowen and Blackmore (London street artists) on the boarded up Sainsbury's close to campus. It marked a point in the pandemic in which many sought to highlight the importance of key workers just about two months after the lockdown began and restrictions were soon to be eased up a bit. The woman in the photo was one of very few people I came across.

Juggling in Covid-times

Submitted by: Devika Hovell
Date: July 2020
Location: At home in Australia

This photo was taken by my husband after we relocated to Australia and will always remind me of the challenge of writing during Covid. Due to home-schooling and nurseries being closed from time to time, pushing ahead with writing projects was often done in the company of children...who were not always entirely respectful of the tools of the research trade!

At the bottom right is the Art Festival poster. You can also see a photo of two women kissing in the street. This is me and my handsome girlfriend!

Tales from Houghton Street: an LSE oral history

Was life as an LSE student so different in 1955 to 2015? What changes have our long-serving staff seen over the years? Where was there a Paternoster lift on campus? Who was Wright of Wright’s Bar? Find the answers to these questions and more in Tales from Houghton Street, an oral history project to celebrate LSE’s 120th anniversary in 2015.

Everyone at LSE has a story to tell and in summer 2015 the oral history project team (Hayley Reed, Sue Donnelly, Clara Cook and Tom Sturdy) was fortunate enough to speak to a small selection of alumni, academic and professional services staff about their LSE experience.

The collection contains one introductory podcast and 30 audio recordings of interviews with alumni and staff who were studying or working at LSE between the 1950s and 2015.

Participants discussed themes including their experiences as students, teachers and researchers at LSE, developments in higher education and the future of LSE. They also shared memories about the changes on LSE’s campus: the buildings, halls of residence, the social life, and about life in London through the years.

Each recording is accompanied by a summary of the interview to help researchers identify key points. The introductory podcast features excerpts from the interviews with alumni Carol Wain (1967), Brian Van Arkadie (1956) and Mary Evans (1967/1968, LSE Centennial Professor, Gender Institute).

Rustling nostalgia

Submitted by: Ruiqi Li
Date: November 2020
Location: On the way to campus from Bankside House [LSE halls of residence]

I was on the way to school with a few friends from Bankside; it was one of the first in person classes we had. Having just arrived in London and as international students coming from different places, we were eager to retain everything we see in the city in our minds. Autumn is slightly chilly and the streets were rather empty because of the pandemic, but it was a unique memory that felt strangely cozy and poetic amongst the chaos happening elsewhere in the backdrop.
